Faithfully Fighting

Fall has Arrived

Well here we are again.  I’m praying everyone is doing well.

I’ve had a busy couple of weeks.  Had my colonoscopy at UVA on Thursday 9/26, everything seemed fine with that.  Had my biopsy on the hard nodes under my arm on Friday 9/27 and then met with my oncologist on Monday 9/29 and had Herceptin treatment.  Found out that the biopsy were positive lymph nodes of cancer.  The doctor seems to think it was an area that was probably there before treatment and is now getting active.  The question is, does that mean the Herceptin isn’t working to keep the cancer from growing, as it has appeared to be working the liver spots, or is this some kind of area that is just showing up and won’t grow any bigger??  My medical oncologist sent me to see my radiology oncologist to see if we can radiate the nodes.  I saw the radiology oncologist Friday 10/3.  This is the same doctor that had treated me in 2006.  He isn’t sure we can radiate the area because it is extremely close to the area radiated before.  Something about damaging (killing) the skin if you radiate more than once.  Anyway, I have a CT scan scheduled for Monday 10/6, to see if the nodes are auxilary nodes (which means the cancer could travel to other organs in my body if they get aggressive).  They aren’t going to do anything until after the UVA surgery anyway.

The “big” surgery is still scheduled for 10/17.  I was trying to talk my oncologist out of it, because I’ve been feeling really good, physically and hated the thought of being cut and weak and all.  But after those positive nodes there isn’t even a question.  Seems he’s probably going to have to “start some aggressive treatment” after I’m healed up.  I’m not sure what that means except I’m sure I won’t feel as good as I do right now.

I’m emotionally wiped out.  I just am refusing to think about all this stuff the rest of the weekend.  I’m taking Katie to the Autumn Conservation Festival of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo today!  I’m really looking forward to it.  We need to do something fun before I get laid up again.

Good morning Lynn, Yes we are well up here in Vermont with the pretty leaves and cooler temps. It is good to learn of your positive results of the Colonoscopy. We will keep praying for the negative things. What fun for you and Katie to be going to the Zoo. In fact you have probably been already when reading this. We love you and think of you everyday. lynnwv Mom, Dad, Patrick,Katie and I just got back from the Zoo Research Center and it was a wonderful fun day. We had a hay ride, saw civil war re-inactors, learned all kinds of interesting facts about animal research. I think Katie's favorite stuff was the pathology labs where she got to look in the microscopes and the stand where she guessed which skulls went with which animals. We walked a lot and it was a beautiful October day. A truely blessed day.

I sure hope you come out of the surgery in good shape - that they get all the cancer - and that you will start healing and feel good again.I am constantly thinking of you and praying for you. Your day at the zoo sounded like fun. It is so important to do normal things to get your mind off yourself for a while tho I know it is hard. We love you, Aunt mary & Ed
